Choosing the Right Medigap Plan: Plan G vs. Plan N vs. Plan F

If you've decided that a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan is right for you, the next step is choosing which plan letter best fits your needs and budget. The three most popular options are Plan G, Plan N, and Plan F.

Medigap Plan F

Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available, covering virtually all out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare. However, Plan F is only available to those who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you qualify, Plan F covers the Part B deductible (which Plans G and N do not), Part A and B coinsurance and copayments, and the first three pints of blood.

Medigap Plan G

Plan G has become the most popular Medigap plan for those who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. It covers everything Plan F covers except the Part B deductible. Because Plan G premiums are generally lower than Plan F, many beneficiaries find that they save money overall even after paying the annual Part B deductible out of pocket.

Medigap Plan N

Plan N offers lower premiums than both Plans F and G, but comes with some cost-sharing. With Plan N, you may pay up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don't result in admission. Plan N does not cover the Part B deductible or Part B excess charges.

Which Plan Should You Choose?

Your choice depends on how you balance premium costs with potential out-of-pocket expenses. Plan G is the sweet spot for most people, while Plan N may be right if you're healthy and want lower premiums. Talk to a Smart Care agent to compare actual premiums in your zip code and find the best value.
